The art of making " things."

So who is really an artist? Someone who just happens to know how to mix color and put it with all the technical knowledge on paper or canvas?
The photographer who happens to know how to work with a camera and film in the darkroom?
The sculptor who knows pulls and image from a block of stone or wood?
The writer who has a gift of words an d can create images in our heads by placing them on a page
of text?

Why not the welder who can run a perfect bead of steel and flux?
Why not a plummer who can run a system of pipes through out a building with out distubing anything it it's way. ?
Why not the auto mechanic who can create a smooth running engine from nothing but steel parts and rubber hoses. ?

Is one art and not the other? God has gifted us each with a special skill, Each is an art. But is one more art than the other?
What IS art?

Another thought-provoking question. And it's scary to comment on for fear of offending. I'm a true believer that art comes in many forms: the woman who whips up new dishes without a cookbook, decorates her home, designs a garden, the pastor who puts together a sermon with just the right mix of humor, truth, visuals, etc....

To me, it has to do with creativity. Simply knowing a skill (ie. learning to follow a sewing pattern and make a dress) is not neccesarily art in my opinion. However, when the seamstess uses a different fabric, decides to add some trim, alters the sleeves... she is being CREATIVE, and that makes it art. One of my very first posts was a silly picture of my Christmas tree-shaped meatloaf. Anyone can follow a recipe and make meatloaf, right? Sculpting it into whimsical shapes to amuse your family... I call it art. It's the creativity.

I'd love to hear the other opinions...

First of all what is there to fear, when we all are part of a body of love. And Janet you are right in your thinking. It's the act of creativiy that makes it art.
But I have come to believe that there really is no
high art or low art. That is the enemy getting into your head. I have beeen blown away by too many
creations by children to think that . The best art comes from the soul. It;s an act of creation that is both thought out and deliberate.
That is why I believe that in the art of welding, Give God your best, deliberatly and it has to be art.
But be prepared for the world to not understand.
But again the world will never understand the maker.
They are too busy trying to get their IPHONES working.

P.S. Can you spell check this stuff or do I have to go back to school?
